Lorna J. Pitt

December 30, 1929 --March 21, 2024

BARABOO-Lorna J. Pitt, 94, died peacefully Thursday March 21, 2024 in her room at Oak Park Place surrounded by family.

Lorna was born in Viroqua, WI on December 30, 1929, the daughter of Chester Hampton and Wilma Irene (Erickson) Ames.

She was a product of a public education in a one-room schoolhouse in rural Retreat, WI and received her degree in Nursing from Milwaukee County General Hospital School of Nursing in 1950. After practicing as an RN throughout her adult years in Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin, her final stop on a payroll was as owner and Head Honcho at Once More consignment boutique in Baraboo. Lorna was a long-time member of the congregation at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Baraboo and volunteered at Baraboo Food Pantry and Kids Ranch. Like her mother, she loved to bake and was quite good at it, as evidenced by her boys’

weight management issues as young adults. She was always ready with a smile and a chuckle and when those who knew her were asked to describe her, invariably the words “kind” and “non-judgemental” were invoked. In short, she was caring and considerate, a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother and grandmother. Lorna met her future husband John “Jack” Pitt when her sister Phyllis, also a nursing student, introduced her. Phyllis was dating Bob Kutschenreuter who was pals with Jack at the time. On July 7, 1951, Lorna married Jack in Wauwatosa. They lived the next 71 years together until Jack passed in 2022. She spent many of those years honing her packing and unpacking skills, as Jack’s career in sales took them to a number of addresses including Greenfield Indiana, East Moline and Prospect Heights in Illinois, and Greendale and Baraboo in Wisconsin. Along the way they started a family with three boys.

Survivors include sons, Jon Pitt, Golden, CO, Monte Pitt, Portland, OR, and Brad Pitt and wife Anne Ruzicka, Baraboo; 9 grandchildren, Melissa Windholz, Amanda Gleaton and husband Brant, Jasmin Pitt, Myriah Pitt, Malarie Montie and husband Eric, Josee Holdeman and husband Colton, Luke Pitt, Tyler Pitt and wife Meredyth , and Connor Pitt; great-grandchildren, Paige Colpitts, Jameson Gleaton, Scarlett Gleaton, Gordon Bertelman, Nora Montie, Jack Montie, Owen Montie, Elsie Montie, Beau Holdeman and Harper Holdeman; brother, Loren Ames and wife Maggie of Necedah, WI, and sister, Cindy Ames, River Falls, WI.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack; brother, Verlyn Ames and sister, Phyllis Kutschenreuter.

The family is planning on a life celebration in the coming months. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in her name to the Kids Ranch (www.thekidsranch.org) or Baraboo Food Pantry (www.baraboofoodpantry.org).
