Richard J. Heinzen was born Jan 22 1947 on the shores of lake Michigan in beautiful Sheboygan WI. As a young man he began his journey in higher education and moved to Happy Hill in 1976, inspired by his deep respect and love for the Baraboo Bluffs. He saw the beauty of this special place long before it was deemed "One of the Last Great Places" by the Nature Conservancy. Per his request we will not list his degrees or accomplishments , though the list would be long. He felt his most important contributions in life were his family, home and conservation efforts.
Rick was a perfectionist and exercised excellence in the craftsmanship of everything he touched. Over his 50 years on the Hill, he turned a 19th century homestead into his paradise on earth. His Happy Hill Legacy lives on in the trees he planted and the land he protected.
He was a kind man who throughout his life demonstrated an infinite amount of empathy, resilience, love, and dare we say brilliance. He was truly a brilliant man.
Rick left this earth on July 17, 2026 in the comfort of his own home surrounded by his family. He will be deeply missed by his wife Kate, children Pete, Dylan, and Maggie, and his eight grandchildren.
