Joyce T. Ryan


Joyce T. Ryan, age 93 of Chula Vista, California, formerly of Baraboo, passed away on Tuesday, August 13, 2013 in California. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 7, 2013 at the Spring Grove Cemetery in Wisconsin Dells.Joyce Thelma Marler was born in Plankinton, South Dakota where she lived with her parents, three brothers, and two sisters. She graduated from Plankinton High School in 1939 and migrated to Chicago where she worked for Spiegel. In the early 40's she migrated to California.In 1943 she married George Streeck. In 1944 Val was born and 11 months later George Jr. came along. George Sr. was killed in the Philippines in April of 1945 and Joyce moved back to South Dakota. In 1947 she married Arthur Hagedorn and in 1949 a son, William, was born. In 1950, the family relocated to Lake City, Minnesota where they lived for 7 years. Art was transferred to Wisconsin in 1957. Joyce lost Art to a kidney disease in 1961 and was widowed again. She met and married John Ryan in 1962 and the family increased by five stepchildren. Joyce gave birth to Kimberly in 1963. After John's retirement, they moved to California in 1974.Joyce continued to work in a school cafeteria for the Santa Cruz school district until she retired and moved to the Salton Sea area where they thoroughly enjoyed their lives. Some years later, John became ill and they moved to Chula Vista to be closer to family and doctors. When John passed, Joyce moved into the Salvation Army Silvercrest Apartments and became very active in the Salvation Army community. As her eyesight failed, she attended the School for the Blind and learned many different life skills that she used to cope with her blindness.Through all of her hardships, she still continued to maintain a positive and life-loving attitude. Joyce passes her sense of humor, love of life, positive attitude, loving heart, beautiful soul, and love of family on to her 4 children, 5 stepchildren, 20 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, and 3 great great-grandchildren.Joyce was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother and will be dearly missed by all of her family and friends.
