William R. “Bill” Hill

William R. "Bill" Hill was born Dec. 24, 1921 in Baraboo to Matthew and Mabel (Schenck) Hill. He attended Lyons Grade School (now West Baraboo) and graduated from Baraboo High School in 1940. In October 1942 he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force Base, Frederick, Okla. where he entered into the Twin-Engine B-25 Flying School, training pilots for combat. As an Electrical Crew Chief he was sent overseas in 1945 and was stationed in Nanking, China, the China-Burma-India theatre where his unit joined others. Bill was Honorably Discharged in 1946 and returned home. He was married Feb. 13, 1947 to LaDorna Jones and during sixty-seven years of marriage she was his partner in business, mother of his children and the love of his life. Their commitment "in sickness and in health" was honored many times over the years. Bill established an electrical business in 1955 and trained young men in the trade, setting high standards in their work. Bill was proud when several of the men later formed their own businesses. From childhood on, his children witnessed an exemplary work ethic, an example to follow in their own lives. He loved the Packers, praised them when they won, re-coached them when they lost, but always the ultimate loyal fan. He loved to bowl, golf, hunt and fish. When he could no longer participate he raised a huge tomato garden and shared the fruit with friends and neighbors. "The time has come to take off the tool pouch, put away the fishpoles and set aside the Veteran's hat. His work is done."
