Calvin Hill


The angels called Calvin E. Hill, of Baraboo on Wed., Oct. 22, 2014. Cal was born Nov. 12, 1924 to Max F. and Mabel (Schenck) Hill, of West Baraboo. He graduated from Lyons Grade School and Baraboo High School with the "class of '42". He was very active in sports in high school and lettered in basketball and track. He was with the US. Army Signal Core during World War II in 1943-45. It was while stationed in Bristol, England that he met the love of his life, Betty Bennett. His duty with the Army took him to the European theatre in France, Belgium, and Germany. After the war, he worked as the store manager at Hill Electric from 1945-46. He became the store owner in 1967 and later sold the business to his son, Jeff, in 1989. He has been a member of the American Legion since 1947, a member of Emanuel United Methodist Church, past member of the Kiwanis, and a member of the Central Komorner Tumbler Club Pigeon Club. In 1984, Tom Stephany as park manager, came to Cal and asked him if he would be interested in helping to get Friends of the Zoo organized. Cal did help and was its first president. Along with Roy Born and Pizza Hut, the Zoo Crew days are still a special event at Oschner Park. He continued to love athletics on the radio or television, especially the Packers, Brewers, Bucks, and Badger football and basketball. He loved raising and showing pigeons and won many awards.Cal is survived by his daughter, Lynda Bennin and husband Bob; son, Jeffrey and wife Diana; grandchildren, Josh Hill of Baraboo, Anne (Tyler) Halm of Great Falls, MT, Jonathan (Jonell) Bennin of Eau Claire, and Greg Bennin of Salt Lake City, UT; great-grandchildren, Bennett Halm and Amelia Bennin; brother, Bill (LaDorna) Hill; sisters, Caryl Scheurman and Janet Keylock; special niece, Lois Luethy; as well as other nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Betty of 58 years; his brother, Max J. and wife Arlene Hill; brother-in-law, Art and wife Phyllis DeKoyer; and brothers-in-law Jerry Scheurman and Chip Keylock.Memorial Services will be held at 11am on Tues., Oct. 28, 2014 at the Emanuel United Methodist Church in Baraboo with Pastor Blake Overlien officiating. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 10am until the time of service, at the church. Burial will take place at Walnut Hill Cemetery, and Military Rites will be conducted by the Baraboo Veteran's Honor Guard. Memorials may be made to Emanuel United Methodist Church, Friends of the Baraboo Zoo, or the Humane Society.
