Donald R. Pierce


Donald R. Pierce, age 84 of Baraboo passed away on Tuesday, July 5, 2016 at home with his family by his side. Donald, son of Ralph and Lila (Alexander) Pierce was born Sept. 5, 1931 in Baraboo. At the age of 18 he enlisted in the United States Army and served as a Sergeant in the 24th Infantry during the Korean War. After being honorably discharged he came home to work for the family business, Pierces Supermarket, Inc. Starting as a butcher of the store he eventually followed in his father's footsteps as the owner.At a Devil's Lake dance he met the love of his life, Patricia Sorenson; they were united in marriage on July 7, 1955.Don served as Mayor of the City of Baraboo from April 19, 1982 to 1988. During his time as mayor, Don purchased property and donated it to the city to house softball fields which is now called Pierce Park. He was a member of the Elks Club and local VFW. In his free time he enjoyed playing softball, crocheting, gardening, fishing, playing piano and restoring his land in LaRue to its natural habitat for wildlife and wetland.Survivors include his wife, Patricia; children, David Pierce, Dennis (Adele) Pierce, Daniel Pierce, Angie Pierce; ten grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brother, Bill (Phyllis) Pierce; sister, Patricia Mueller; sister-in-law, Elaine Pierce; as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Donald Pierce; and his brother, Jim Pierce. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, July 9, 2016 at 11 a.m. at Redlin Funeral Home with Pastor Marianne Cotter officiating. Visitation will be held on Friday, July 8, 2016 from 4 -7 p.m. and from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home on Saturday. Burial will follow at Rock Hill Cemetery where military rites will be conducted. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ducks Unlimited or the Wounded Warrior Project.
